In September 2015, the Department of Health and Wellness (DHW) approved one-time grants to fund two opioid overdose prevention demonstration projects. The first project was led by Direction 180, in partnership with Mainline Needle Exchange, and targets people at risk for opioid overdose in the Halifax Regional Municipality (HRM). The second project has been led by Mental Health and Addictions, in partnership with the Ally Centre, and targets people at risk for opioid overdose in the Cape Breton area. These organizations are providing opioid overdose prevention education and distributing free take home naloxone kits
As of September 2017, more than 1500 kits have been given out and there have been at least 60 reported opioid overdose reversals, as part of this project.
In April 2017, the DHW announced funding for the establishment of the Nova Scotia Take Home Naloxone (THN) Program. The program provides opioid overdose prevention/naloxone administration training and free take home naloxone kits to Nova Scotians at risk of an opioid overdose and those who are most likely to witness and respond to an opioid overdose. The aim is to prevent opioid overdoses and related death from occurring in Nova Scotian communities.
The THN Program is led by Nova Scotia Health Authority (NSHA). To locate a registered site click here.
NSHA will be establishing new sites during the Fall of 2017. Stay tuned for upcoming announcements.
